Centre Eyes Investment in West Bengal’s Tea and Textile Sectors, Says CM Suvendu Adhikari
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday said the Central government is interested in supporting the development of the state's tea and textile industries, describing it as a significant opportunity for economic growth and employment.
Speaking at the inauguration of the fourth Kolkata Couture Expo in Kolkata, Adhikari said the proposal was discussed during his meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi on July 4.
Centre Focuses on Tea and Textile Industries
According to Adhikari, Sitharaman expressed a strong interest in helping revive West Bengal's tea sector and strengthening its textile industry.
He said the Union Finance Minister highlighted the need to improve the condition of tea garden workers, noting that around 25 tea gardens in the state remain closed.
The discussions also focused on Bengal's traditional textile hubs, including Purbasthali in East Burdwan and Shantipur in Nadia, which are known for their skilled weaving communities and high-quality handloom products.
Nirmala Sitharaman Expected to Visit West Bengal
Adhikari said Sitharaman is expected to visit West Bengal in the last week of August, where further discussions on investments and development initiatives are likely to take place.
He urged textile manufacturers and industry leaders to take advantage of the Centre's interest by investing in the state and assured them of full support from the state government.
Textile Industry Seen as Growth Opportunity
Calling it a "golden opportunity," Adhikari said the government is prepared to facilitate investment in the textile sector and encourage industrial expansion.
He also invited industry representatives to submit proposals for the sector's development and indicated that the state government could consider legislative changes, if required, to support business growth.
Focus on Law and Order
The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of maintaining a strong law and order environment to boost investor confidence.
He said the state government would not tolerate hooliganism and reiterated its commitment to creating a business-friendly atmosphere for industries, particularly textiles.
The two-day Kolkata Couture Expo, where Adhikari made the announcement, is expected to generate business worth around ₹1,000 crore, highlighting the growing potential of West Bengal's textile and apparel sector.
